Ryan drove along dark country lanes for a mile before turning on the headlights. Rollo and Danny followed in their Nissan. They kept in touch via what Ryan called a “closed-link comms system”. Whatever that meant. He assured her no one could overhear their conversation.

“How did you do that?” Lara asked once she’d found her voice again.

“What?”

“Drive in the pitch black without running off the road.”

“The moon’s out. There’s plenty enough light to drive by.”

“And it helps when you have the eyes of a mountain lion. Over.” Rollo said through the radio.

Ryan didn’t react to the comment. “Munitions check. Sound off. Over.”

Danny spoke first. “Glock 17, four full mags. I had to drop the L85 when the doc fell. Over.”

Lara twisted to face the back and tried to give him the evil eye through the rear window, but the Nissan was nothing but a pair of dipped headlights. “I wouldn’t have fallen if you hadn’t grabbed my arm.”

“Sorry, Doc. My bad. Over.”

“But,” she added, “I meant to thank you for helping and apologise for running off.”

Danny grunted. “You’re welcome, Doc. Apology accepted. Over.”

“Rollo? Over.” Ryan asked.

“One Glock, three full mags. How ’bout you? Over.”

“Walther P99. Two full mags. Over.”

“Since when do you use a Walther? Over.”

“Borrowed it from Gravel. He won’t be needing it anymore. Over.”

“True enough. Rollo, out.” Rollo’s laugh contained little mirth.

“Lara, you’ll find a ballistics vest on the back seat. Grab it and put it on.”

She leaned over the seat and had to use two hands to lift the thing. She had no idea bulletproof vests were so heavy.

Ryan glanced at her. “Your head goes through the big hole. Pull the Velcro straps at the sides tight and there you go. That thing will stop anything but an armour-piercing sniper’s round.”

Lara shook her head. “What if the sniper’s aiming at my head? I don’t want it. If you aren’t wearing one, then neither am I.”

“Lara,” Ryan said. “Please put it on. If we had more, we’d all be wearing them.”

Although at least three sizes too large, once on, the vest wasn’t too uncomfortable. One compensation for the weight, it kept her warm.

Ryan dropped a gear, turned right at a T-junction, and stamped on the accelerator. He checked the Velcro fastenings.

“Not exactly haute couture,” he said, smiling, “but you won’t be going near any catwalks for a while. Not that you’d be out of place in Milan, New York, or London … Well, you know.”

A compliment? He liked her? Protecting her wasn’t just a sense of duty. He actually liked her. A flush warmed her cheeks, and her heart trilled.

If only they’d met in different circumstances …

Ryan cleared his throat and concentrated on the road.

They drove north. After an hour of long silences interspersed with desultory chatter, Lara’s curiosity took control.

“Where are we going?”

Ryan scratched his chin and took a moment to reply. “I have a friend, Mike, in a place called Long Buckby. He’ll put us up while I work out my next move.”

“Your next move?”

“We’ll talk about it later.
